Malaysia and Singapore bands milk-based products from China

The situation has worsened as more reports surface about the impact of the melamine tainted milk from China.

Damage so far?
  • 53,000 children reported ill
  • 104 classified as critical
  • 3 deaths -- so far
How did it get into the milk?
  • Milk farmers water-down the milk so they can sell more
  • They add in melamine to fool tests into showing the watered-down milk is still high in protein
  • The milk passes tests and gets distributed and made into milk powder, yogurt, chocolates etc....
Malaysia and Singapore have started banning milk-based products from China, as a precautionary measure. Many of you would have received SMSs warning people about a whole list of branded candies. I have my doubts on those, especially if they are not made in China, or made with Chinese milk.

Still.... here are some reports on what our government is doing: here , here and here

Tainted Chinese Milk affects other products

Just when you thought you'd be safe so long as you avoided milk from China, there is breaking news that authorities have found other products made with Chinese milk that have also been found to be contaminated by melamine.

So far, Singapore has identified 3 products to be contaminated (remember, it applies only to China-made ones):
  • Dutch Lady strawberry flavoured milk
  • Yili Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt Flavoured Ice Confection
  • White Rabbit milk candy (I used to and still love this sweet!!!)
There's even an SMS going around expanding on that list to cover a whole bunch of international brand, China-made chocolates too. So far, I haven't seen any news reports substantiating that SMS, but be on a look out ya... better be safe than sorry!

How safe is your favourite bottle?

About 22 years or so ago, soft drink manufacturers started replacing their large glass bottles with lightweight, and hip-looking plastic bottles. These PET bottles quickly gained public acceptance and was soon seen in every supermarket shelf.

Along the way, some smart guy figured that these nifty bottles would make cheap and perfectly practical water bottles, in place of the much more expensive Tupperware bottles. Before you knew it every other student was toting a PET bottle. Some manufacturers even made straps so you can fasten onto these bottles and make carrying these around easier.

Fast forward 10 years later, and the public started warming up to the idea of drinking mineral or filtered water out of bottles as well. These were also made of PET, and soon replaced soft drink bottles as the 'even hipper' water bottle.

By now, you'd have to have been hiding under a rock this past decade if you don't already know that re-using PET bottles for all drinking liquids is a big NO-NO. Studies indicate these bottles may leach DEHP into the water. DECP is a suspected cancer-causing chemical.

Of course it all depends on which side of the story you hear. PET manufacturers' FAQs will say this is a load of baloney. And some people will tell you if you listen to every warning, you won't even be able to breath, let alone live to the next day. Go figure!

Back to our history lesson. About 5 years or so ago, along came a new wonder bottle, made of polycarbonate (PC for short). These were touted to be the perfect medium for water bottles -- they were very tough, durable, looked pleasant, were recyclable, heat resistant, odour-free, and most importantly, perfectly safe.

Most, if not all of us, fearing for our health, ditched our PET bottles in favour this new, 'space age' bottles in an instant! The considerable take-up factor was also aided by the fact that for all its benefits, these bottles were still much cheaper than Tupperware!

PC is a really versatile plastic. It is actually clearer than glass and can transmit light better. Because of these qualities, it is used to make high-end reading lenses. This stuff is also used for making CDs and DVDs. You find them in baby feeding bottles, tough plastic appliances, car head- and brakelights, skylights, display cabinets, ... the list just goes on!

With so many wonderful uses, you'd imagine you can't go wrong with this stuff! Unfortunately, recent studies have found that with regular use, PC can leach BPA (bisphenol A), a hormone messer-upper. Some studies link it to breast and ovarian cancer, while others warn against dangers to infants.

2 days ago, there's even a news report about a class action suit againt the manufacturors of baby bottles and sippy cups for a host of health problems like prostate and breast cancer, diabetes,
premature onset of puberty in females, lowered sperm count and
infertile sperm in men, developmental toxicity, attention deficit
disorders.

So how do you identify which bottles are safe?
The trick is to look at the bottom of plastic ware, for the triangular recycle signs.
The look something like this:

So far, plastics with the number 2, 4 and 5 have yet to be reported to be dangerous or known to have caused any harmful effects. So your safest bet is to go with plastic products with these numbers.

Numbers to avoid:
  • #1 - The soft drinks or mineral water (PET) bottles
  • #3 - for PVC, which is not a food-grade plastic and should be avoided
  • #6 - The familiar white 'styrofoam' boxs used when we 'tapau' our food. These contain a harmful neurotoxin
  • #7 - PC falls under the miscellaneous plastics category, along with other classes of plastics
To be fair, PC bottle makers like Nalgene have come up with BPA free PC bottles now. Similarly, you can also find BPA-free baby feeding bottles in the market -- you just to be on a look out for these products.

Forestgrovelive.com has published this simple reference card that you can easily use as a guide. It doesn't specifically pick PET out as a danger, but like I said, there are lots of people have either support or reject this.... so its your choice!

Stay healthy ya!!

Are your kids safe in your car?

I have been meaning to write about hypermiling since my last post about fuel saving devices. And wanted to do so today. But what I saw this morning made me change my mind and switch to this topic instead.

There seems to be a lot of ignorant or utterly stupid Malaysian drivers around. No, I'm not referring to the those who hog lanes or tailgate or any other kinds of inconsiderate drivers ... for them, I'll probably reserve a whole future post!!

I'm referring to the loving and obliging parents who are either too clueless or thoughtless about child-safety in cars. These are the people who allow their kids to stand or climb around in the front passenger seat or sit in the driver's lap, while the car moves along at full speed.

Haven't they heard of this thing called inertia?
  • The kid is standing on the passenger seat one minute, the car hits another car, and in the next split-second, the kid smashes through the windscreen to who-knows-what beyond that.

Haven't they heard of these things called airbags?

Don't be misled by movies or TV shows
which always seem to show airbags as gentle, pillowy,

rubber balloons that perfectly protects the driver
and doesn't even
mess up your hairdo!
  • In an accident, an airbag deploys at the speed of 320kmh ... and 'deploy' means the tough nylon bag smacks into your face and chest faster than you can blink!
  • The airbag has to deploy with sufficient force to prevent the body from hitting against the steering or dashboard.... i.e. has to hit you hard and fast enough so you will not travel more than a few inches forward
  • Old airbags have only one setting -- they fully deploy when triggered -- regardless of whether you're at 25kmh or 60kmh
  • New airbags have a 2-stage mode -- they fully deployment at high speed crashes; partially at lower speeds
  • Airbags are built for adults.... they are extremely harmful or even deadly for children below 12
  • If a child seat / bassinet is placed with the child facing the airbag -- if deployed, the airbag will likely kill the child
  • If the same seat is placed facing backwards (away) from the airbag -- the bag is strong enough to smash through the seat, killing the child by inflicting massive head injuries; or it could push the seat backwards and crush the child against the seat
  • Airbags are a form of SRS (supplementary restraint system) and WILL ONLY WORK properly when used together with seat belts. If you think the airbag alone will safe your skin, YOU'RE WRONG
  • If you must have your child sit in front, look up the manual on how to disable the passenger-side airbag

Haven't they heard of rear passenger seat belts -- tie those little squirts up in the back!
  • Allowing the children to roam about freely at the back is also rarely a good a really bad idea
  • Don't wait until the law is enforced.... Singapore has enforced it, Australia has enforced it.... do you think just because Malaysia has deferred the enforcement by 6 months, the laws of physics will also not apply for 6 months?
  • Use a booster seat to make sure the child is brought up to sufficient height for the seat belt to work properly

The technologies in modern cars are lightyears better than those of 25 years ago. You now have the ABS, EBD, Airbags, pre-tensioner seat belts, vastly better tyres, slip and skid control, impact crumple zones, more rigid passenger area.... the list goes on.

But wonderful as these safety innovations are, they come to nothing, if we do not heed safetly practices and put our own children in harm's way.

Sorry if I've been preachy .... have a good drive, and may you and your family arrive safely!

The ultimate gym in a pill?

Ever wondered if it would be possible to stay healthy, slim and in great shape without needing rigorous exercise? And add that to being able to eat anything you want, yet have your stamina double that of what you previously have?

The WSJ and NY Times have just reported that researchers have discovered two drugs that gives you the same effects as if you've had a good aerobic workout!!

Here are some of the benefits of the drugs:
  • Improved ability of cells to burn fat
  • Body is better at retaining muscle mass
  • Increased stamina and endurance by between 44% to 70%
On top of that, these drugs even show promise in fighting obesity (30% of Americans are obese, 60% are overweight!), protection against diabetes and even muscular dystrophy (you muscles waste away for no reason).

Sounds too good to be true? Yeah, it is -- too good to be true. Sorry to burst your bubble.

These drugs have only so far been tested successful on mice. One of the two drugs are in late-stage human trials -- but have been withdrawn due to toxic side effects.

Already there are fears that these drugs will still find their way into gym lockers where there is a ready market where athletes look for that extra edge over their competitors.

Remember during the 80s when we first heard of performance-enhancing steroids? Those goodies targeted what's called the 'fast-twitch' muscles. These muscles burn sugars, and are the ones responsible for giving us the power and speed for sprints and any activity requiring a burst of energy. Those steroids were bad, remember, as they mess up your kidneys and a bunch of organs.

These new drugs target the 'slow-switch' muscles. These muscles are effective at burning fat, and are the ones that give you sustained performance -- like long jogs and marathons.

If there are sportsmen among you who think "oh I should go out and grab myself some of these GW1516 and Aicar pills (yeah, they're called that) from GlaxoSMithKlien, you better forget it. The guys are already one step ahead of you! They have already developed ways to detect this stuff the same way they test athletes for doping.

AND, if ever you stumble on those 'miracle' fat burners and 'as seen on TV' wonder cures.... be careful you know what you're getting yourself into!

For me, its back to the threadmill, or orbitrek, or a dip in the pool, if ever I feel guilty that I'd downed yet another half-tub of Rum 'n Raisin!

Is your mobile phone ZAPPING your brain?

DUH! Of course it is! Isn't it obvious already?

That's as far as my opinion is concerned anyway. :)
And I don't think I'm alone with that view.

So far, although many researchers have hinted on the link between the phone radiation and brain tumors, you still don't see a Surgeon General's sticker on the side of your phone do you? That's because its either there really still is no conclusive evidence of the fact, or, that the industry including us users are in a state of denial.

I vote the latter.

But looks like finally, somebody is saying different now!

The LA times blog discussed yesterday, an Associate Press report that the University of Pittsburgh director of cancer research, Dr. Ronald B. Berberman has finally done what nobody else has dared to do: Publish a warning about the possible risk of cancer from frequent cell phone use.

Its actually a warning published to Berberman's faculty and staff, and not a general public warning. But that is seen as a bold step.... and is based on some initial, unpublished data.

Hope Jean-Luc's personal communicator doesn't give him breast cancer!

What does it mean to all of us?
  • Keep it away from children -- you don't want to risk messing up their still-growing young minds
  • Use the speaker phone function or hands-free / bluetooth headset
  • If you really must talk long, use a land line, please!

I know what you're thinking. Doesn't the bluetooth hands-free emit radiation as well? Think of it this way:
  • The bluetooth set only needs to be powerful enough to reach your phone up to 10m away
  • Your phone needs to communicate to the nearest base station from anything between 1.5km to up to 40km away! That's a lot more radiation it will have to put out to reach such a distance
  • Its the case of the lesser of the 2 evils anyway

So what do YOU think? We've lived with the tai-kor-tai for many decades now. For the younger ones, its been there since day one of their lives... and cannot imagine life without it. Is it worth the risk? Can we just junk the phone and return to sending smoke signals? HOW?

Leave me a comment.... would love to hear from you!
